Majors in Biology

Majors:

Individualized Major

1. Biological Sciences Major (B.S. or B.A.)

Research Assistant
This degree is intended for students interested in a general degree in biology, including subsequent careers in medicine, dentistry, and veterinary science.  By selection of suitable courses, in consultation with your advisor, any area of biology can be emphasized. In addition to completing one course from each of three "core groups", students are urged to complete at least four courses with laboratory work in any of the biology departments.  It is possible to obtain a B.A. degree in Biological Sciences, although for most students we recommend taking the few extra courses needed for the B.S. degree.

Students majoring in Biological Sciences may elect to satisfy requirements for either of two more specialized concentrations:

    • Biotechnology Concentration (B.S.).

    • This program emphasizes biochemistry, microbiology, and molecular genetics and leads to a B.S. in Biological Sciences with a concentration in Biotechnology.

5. Structural Biology and Biophysics Major (B.S.)

This degree is intended for students interested in the more physical and chemical aspects of biology.  Because Biology 107 and 108 are not required for this major, students can begin chemistry, math, and physics courses as soon as possible.

6. Individualized Major

You may want a major tailored to your particular interests. Look into the Individualized Major program to find out how to combine biology with other areas for a major that fits your needs better than those above.
