Biological Sciences Major
Biological Sciences Major
-- overview
This degree is intended for students interested in a general degree
in biology. However, by selection of courses, in consultation
with your advisor, you can choose to emphasize any area of biology.
In addition to completing one course from each of three "core groups",
students are urged to complete at least four courses with laboratory
work in any of the biology departments. It is possible to obtain
a B.A. degree in Biological Sciences, although for most students we
recommend taking the few extra courses needed for the B.S. degree.

Prerequisite courses:
- Biology 107 and 108 or 110. (May be taken in either order)
- Chemistry 127, 128 or 124, 125, 126 (required for B.S.; recommended
for B.A.).
- Mathematics 115, 116 or MATH 112, 113, 114 (required for B.S. degree).
- Physics 131, 132 or 121, 122, 123 or equivalent (required for B.S.
degree).

Courses required for the major:
- Core course: either MCB 200 (Human Genetics), MCB 203 (Introduction
to Biochemistry), MCB 204 (Biochemistry), MCB 210 (Cell Biology),
MCB 213 (Concepts of Genetic Analysis), or MCB 229 (Fundamentals of
Microbiology)
- Core course: either EEB 244/244W (General Ecology) or 245/245W
(Evolutionary Biology)
- Core course: either PNB 250 (Animal Physiology) or PNB 274-275 Enhanced
Human Physiology and Anatomy (Note: PNB 274-275 must be taken in sequence
to be counted towards the Biology major).
- at least 24 credits of 200's level courses or above from EEB, MCB
and PNB. It is strongly recommended that at least four of these courses
include laboratory work. Independent Study (course #299 in any of
the three biology departments) will provide majors with a means of
gaining additional specific research experience.
- at least 12 credits of 200's level courses or higher in related
fields, which can include biology courses other than those used to
satisfy requirements a-d above.

Biology Courses not applicable
towards the major:
Please note that the following biology courses open to sophomores
are not primarily for majors and may not be counted toward the 24
credits required for a major in biology (although they may count as
related courses, with the advisor's approval):
- MCB 218 or 218W Heredity and Society
- PNB 264 and 265 Human Physiology and Anatomy

Concentrations:
Some students majoring in Biological Sciences may wish to follow
a more structured program. One concentration is currently available:
- Biotechnology Concentration:
Students interested in a career in Biotechnology are encouraged
to follow a program emphasizing biochemistry, microbiology and molecular
genetics and leading to a B.S. degree in Biological Sciences with
concentration in Biotechnology. A Master of Science degree in Biotechnology
is offered by UConn; students following the Biotechnology concentration
should be able to complete this in one additional year beyond the
normal B.S. Interested students should contact the Biotechnology
Program, Biotechnology Center, U-149, University of Connecticut,
Storrs, CT 06269-3149 before entering the University or during their
first year. In addition to satisfying the minimum requirements
for the B.S. or B.A. degree, students must take all of the following
courses:
- CHEM 232Q, 243, 244, and 245
- MCB 204, 212, 213, 229, and 232C
- five courses from the following list, including at least three
from Group A.
- Biotechnology/core laboratory courses: MCB 215, 224, 226,
235.
- Biotechnology/key related courses: MCB 207Q, 208Q, 259; CHEG
203; PLSC 292, 308.
- recommended elective courses to complete the required minimum
of 24 credits 200-level credits in Biology: MCB 209, 210, 211,
217, 219, 220/220W, 233, 240W, 241W, 246, 299; PNB 250, 260; EEB
