Biology Advising FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about 1100's level courses.

Q. Should I take Biology 1107 before 1108?
A. It doesn't matter. The two courses cover different material and do not assume any sequence. Since Biology 1107 includes more chemical concepts, some students will benefit by taking 1107 after they have completed Chemistry 1127-1128.

Q. Should I take Biology 1102 before taking 1107 or 1108?
A. No. Biology 1102 is intended for non-majors and covers less material at a lower depth. All Biology majors, as well as students in pre-professional programs such as allied health, agriculture and natural resources, pharmacy, pre-medical, pre-dental, pre-veterinary, etc. should take Biology 1107 (and in most cases 1108 -- see next question).

Q. My intended major only lists Biology 1107 -- should I take 1108 as well?
A. Some majors such as Pharmacy, MCB, and others, only list Biology 1107 as a requirement, not 1108. Students following the recommended curriculum for these programs may not have time to fit Biology 1108 into their schedule, and are not required to take it. However, we do recommend that all students going into a biologically related career take Biology 1108 if at all possible, even if the intended major does not require it. Some medical schools require a year of introductory biology, so even if you expect to major in MCB, but want to go to medical school, you will need Biology 1107 and 1108. By taking both courses, you will also have the flexibility to change your major later on, for example from MCB to Biological Sciences, PNB, or EEB.

Q. Can I take Biology 1110 instead of 1108?
A. Yes. Biology 1110 emphasizes botany more strongly than 1108, but 1110 is a perfectly valid alternative to 1108, and will satisfy any prerequisite requirements for Biology 1108.

Q. How do I get honors credit for Biology 1107 or 1108?
A. Every semester we offer sections of a 1 credit seminar course, Biology 1109, for students who are concurrently enrolled in Biology 1107 and 1108 (two separate courses). Honors students should enroll in the appropriate course for honors credit, depending on whether you are in 1107 or 1108. Honors students who have received UConn ECE or AP credit for Biology 1107 or 1108 can still take either 1109 course without taking 1107 or 1108. NOTE: even if you are not in the honors program, but are interested in a seminar course to enrich Biology 1107 or 1108, you can enroll in Biology 1109, if space is available.
