Biology Advising FAQ

What electives should I take?

One of the true joys of college is the opportunity to discover new worlds of ideas and activities that have the potential to enrich your life. No matter how much you love biology and want to devote your time and effort to the sciences, you should definitely take electives in other areas. Some of these electives will be courses you can use to satisfy general education credits, but even so, don't just take a course because it fits your schedule if there's something else that interests you more.

Everyone will have their own list of favorites -- here are a few suggestions for electives:
  • a course in music appreciation
  • a course in the literature of some country, or culture, or period
  • a course in psychology
  • singing in chorus, or playing in band
  • a course in the history of some country or period
  • a course in philosophy
  • a course in art appreciation
  • a course in anthropology
  • a course in theater, including attending productions at UConn

Electives should be just that -- something you "elect" to take because it appeals to you, even if your choices are sometimes constrained by a list. If you start something and find it abysmally boring, drop it in the first week of classes and try something else. Life is short, don't waste it!
